Film of the Week: Baby Driver

I thoroughly enjoyed watching Baby Driver. Written and directed by Edgar Wright, this is one of the very few original films coming out this year that’s not adapted or is a reboot or is a sequel – a clever, funny, and at times, emotional ride.

Edgar Wright wrote the story of this film around a playlist of songs, and the editing reflects the synchronicity of the two. Baby drives the cars in time to the music, the bullets fire to the beat, and the songs are perfectly picked to represent the scene in question.

Working as a getaway driver, Baby (Ansel Elgort) relishes in the fact that he believes to be done with that life, but unfortunately, he couldn’t have been further from the exit. After completing the ‘last mission’ he sets about making a normal life for himself, and in doing so, falls in love with a waitress, Debora, (Lily James). Ansel and Lily’s acting during their scenes together heightened the two character’s chemistry to the point that I was hooked on every word they said to each other and it only but increased the impact during the later scenes when she finds out about the life Baby now begrudgingly lives. Being the two main characters, they are written to stand out from the rest, however, with everyone’s performance being outstanding, the two main characters needed to be on an entirely new level, which increased the enjoyment level, making it highly memorable – you can tell that they were simply enjoying working on this film from start to finish.

This was drenched in passion. Edgar Wright’s attention to detail with the songs and his unique directing talent made for one heck of an entertaining experience that I, of course, want to re-experience many times over. The opening sequence is designed to show off Baby’s insane skills, setting the scene and atmosphere for the rest of the film. I was hooked immediately and never left my seat at the cinema until the credits started to roll, but even then I stayed until the very end because I just didn’t want to miss any of the perfect songs that were either made especially for the song or handpicked by Edgar Wright himself whilst writing the script.

The finished product is something of a masterpiece, a film that I’m sure will be on multiple ‘top 10’ lists in the future for various categories – the first list should be “the top most original films of the 2010s”

I do highly recommend Baby Driver.
