Film of the Week: Thor: Ragnarok

Epic and funny. Visually stunning and musically awesome. Thor Ragnarok, the third in the series and the seventeenth film overall within Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, is by far the best Thor movie yet. In this story, with Oden having passed on, his sister returns, the Goddess of Death, hell-bent on ruling the nine realms and beyond. It’s Thor’s mission to stop her and save the people of Asgard. Thor’s sister, Hela, is powerful enough to shatter the Mjolnir into pieces with ease, leaving Thor defenceless.

As well as following Thor’s story, we also see the film’s version of Planet Hulk, where Hulk has been living on an alien world for two years, fighting in an arena as the champion of the Grand Master. He’s grown significantly since we last saw him in Age of Ultron. He has a developed personality and can talk instead of the raging beast he once only was. Seeing Thor and Hulk battle it out in the arena was incredibly fun. In fact, every aspect of this film was incredibly fun, including the comedy.

Marvel’s style includes a few one-liners in the dialogue that are genuinely funny, and as the films progressed and Marvel developed their style some more and grew more comfortable with it, they’ve been able to add play around with it a bit, without actually straying too far in the other direction. Sometimes they do add a bit too much comedy in their films, Ant-Man being an example of the one-liners being in some of the wrong places. However, in this film, the comedy was perfect every time. This could easily be classified as an action-comedy-superhero film.

There are many elements at play throughout, it wouldn’t have surprised me if one of them wasn’t refined enough compared to the others, but instead, Taika Waitit’s direction never missed a beat. The exposition was done properly, the editing stayed quick and true to the nature of the film, the soundtrack in the background and at times when in the foreground was amazing. I don’t think I can give this film any more praise than I already have.

If I had the chance to see it again right now, I would. I will be waiting impatiently for the DVD release so I can enjoy what is probably the best film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date.

Thanks for reading

  1. i might not claim this movie as movie of the week but as the movie of the month. As the blogger itself says that its funny yet epic and truly second his opinion. Marvel never disappoints whenever they launch a movie and this movie is no less. The thing i liked about it most was the way the have incorporated funny innuendos in what seem like a very serious situation.

  2. When she meets you, her presence is enjoyed and allows you to enjoy her extraordinary body. It certainly fills in as an alternative to desolation where our customers ignore every stress of life and become stronger to deal with new worries
