The sequel to Grease, this is set
in 1960/61 but this one seems more modern compared to Grease set in 1959. The
songs are just as catchy as the first film but they didn’t seem to become as
popular for a sing along as the ones in Grease has nowadays.
Grease 2 works as a sequel, but
it still has the essence of Grease running through it, with Frenchy (Didi Conn)
returning and being a friend to Michael (Maxwell Caulfield), Michael being
Sandy’s (Olivier Newton John, Grease) cousin. Also with it being set at the
same high school (Rydell High) you also have the same headmistress and other
members of staff. However, this film could also work as a standalone. There are
enough differences to be as the same quality as the first. The swap from cars
to motorbikes is an example of one of them.
There is some great casting in
this film, the chemistry between Paulette (Lorna Luft) and Nogerelli (Adrian
Zmed) is there for them to make a great couple, even though it is not all plain
sailing.
The two main characters are also
well cast the chemistry builds between Stephanie (Michelle Pfeiffer) and
Michael.
My favourite song out of both
films is ‘Cool Rider’ and after Stephanie sings it to Michael he works with it
and with the help of the T Birds (although I cannot condone cheating) pulls it
off. Which brings me to the question “should he have changed himself for her;
did he change for her?” My answer would be, “I think it was a hobby outlet, rather
than studying; he found something fun, that he enjoyed doing in his spare time.
The song ‘Reproduction’ is a fun
and clever way of teaching a sex class, but in this film the characters are less
active in that area, than the characters in Grease were, which makes for a more
of a clean cut film out of the two.
The talent show in the film is a
well put together show, realistic in that you have bad acts and great acts,
just what you would find when putting on a show like that. This is fun to watch
especially when people end up on stage who shouldn’t be there.
Overall, this film as a sequel or
working as a standalone is one ‘Cool Ride’.
