With a constant bombardment of responsibilities
each and every day, attempting to organise a heap of mess into a coherent structured
plan so everything can fit within the specified time, and if you’re lucky you
can go home when supposed to – and there’s a massive rush near the end as you’re
running around like a headless chicken, juggling about a million things at once
– and finally it’s time to go home and you can relax and breathe and forget
about the incredibly hectic day. You’ll be surprised how common this is at work.
It’s possible to have a few days in a row where it’s constant, unrelenting
rushing around.
It’s rare to have one of those days where not much happens, and things go exactly according to plan
with no problems, and you can focus on things without stressing about literally
everything else, it’s strangely annoying. It’s annoying to have a good day at
work purely because you’re expecting things to go wrong. You’re constantly thinking
that things are going too well – you’ve missed something, made a mistake
somewhere down the line, or everything will flip upside down for seemingly no
reason at all and you’re right back in the chaos of it all… but no, it really is
a simple, good day where everything just falls into place.
Having a good day amongst the chaos
does seem out of place. It’s nice to relax whilst doing your work, but you’re
so adjusted to coping with complete pandemonium, having a calm, peaceful,
orderly day keeps you more on the edge of your seat than any other day. Those
annoyingly good days make you more stressed than the bedlam of the others
purely because you’re waiting for something to happen.
And sometimes, it does happen. A
calm morning can suddenly transition into absolute mayhem in the afternoon, and
you almost sigh with relief because you know you’re back in familiar territory.
You’re so well adjusted to the unexpected happening during those stressful days
nothing surprises you anymore so it paradoxically becomes expected, and so it’s
strangely easy to attend to. What is truly unexpected is when things go right
with minimum input.
Having a day where you can move
your thumb only an inch and three tasks are done at once is more unpredictable
than anything else because at any moment, you may have to dance The Hokey Pokey
whilst juggling five balls and making sure the plates are continuously spinning
on their sticks, but it’s the impossible latter than you’ve configured a
perfect routine for, so when that’s interrupted you can feel lost and confused,
sometimes bored, and being lost and confused and bored is just annoying, isn’t
it?
