It is a well-known fact that some mothers and teenage daughters
don’t get on at the best of times. This is however, not the best of times for
the Russell family, they have moved house away from Cindy’s (Elaine Bromka)
father and Grandad to the kids. The eldest daughter Tia (Jean Louisa Kelly)
resents having to look after her brother Miles (Macaulay Culkin) and sister
Maizy (Gaby Hoffmann) after school. This starts as a fairly typical family life
with both parents working, but a phone call in the middle of the night throws
this into disarray or does it?
When Cindy and Bob (Garrett M. Brown) have to make a mad dash to
go and look after Cindy’s father, they struggle to find someone to look after
the kids. After much searching and phone calls, Uncle Buck, Bobs brother
(unfortunately for Cindy) quickly comes to the top of the list.
Uncle Buck is a fly by night, happy go lucky man, he is not
married and has no children he is in effect the last person Cindy wants to look
after her children, but they have no choice.
It is fun to watch Buck the next morning jumping into his new
domestic life looking after his nieces and nephew. He is a big hit with the
younger ones but Tia, thinking she as a teen knows everything and is at odds
with Buck. At first he is taken aback then kind of sees it as a challenge to
win her over.
Tia has a boyfriend and this film shows what is on the mind of
most teenage boys, Buck is very protective of Tia and she quickly learns Buck
was right all along. Bucks unique way of revenge wins Tia over. His happy go
lucky detachment is brilliantly shown in helping him get the job done and
proving that he actually does know his stuff.
The shock comes at the end when Tia becomes closer to her mother
Cindy. Uncle Buck has caused a massive shift in the family where they once had
no faith in him; he proved them wrong.
This is a simple, calm, and nice feel-good film and is great at
showing that you don’t judge a family member on how they are living, judge them
on how well they look out for the family when it really counts.
Some people may surprise you.
