Movie of the Week
Time Lapse:
A
simple and incredibly affective film, Time Lapse focuses on three friends
discovering a camera that is able to take pictures 24 hours into the future.
The simple value
comes from the entire film staying within the walls of their home and not going
to other countries. What I like about this film the most is how it captures
(pardon the pun) what life would actually be like if three friends discovered
something as strange as the camera. It’s obvious that they start to use it for
personal gain, but then things start taking a
turn for the worse. It starts to get into someone’s head and jiggles about
until he snaps, eventually coming down hard on the other two.
It’s
a great mystery and only gets juicer with
every picture. All the important details are only given out when absolutely necessary so
not to spoil the tension.
At
first I thought that this was going to be a
boring film, since they characters don’t go anywhere, but I found myself being
roped in until the credits rolled up, and by that time, my eyes were wide with
shock. The ending will leave you stunned purely because of how accidental it
felt. I got attached to the characters and nearing the end I didn’t want the
film to end as I wanted to know what would have happened next, but at the same
time it was a perfect ending, rounding off the story with no effort as at that
point it was practically writing itself.
I
chose this film because of the unexpectedness that comes with it. I expected it to be yet
another time travel film, and although it does follow a standard paradox, the
story that comes with it makes it feel unique through and through. I highly
recommend it.

TV Episode of the Week
Doctor
Who – Series 9 – Episode 10: Face the Raven:
It
was only a matter of time before Clara departed from Doctor Who. Whether it
would be forever or a small possibility that she could return, it was anyone’s
guess. I was on the side of Clara not returning at all, and I got what I had
expected.
Clara
has affected the Doctor’s life in so many ways, from travelling through the
Doctor’s time stream and saving him always, to being the monster under the
Doctor’s bed, she has well and truly cemented herself into Doctor Who lore
forever. I would even say she was the most impactful of all his companions, and
that’s saying something considering what Rose, Martha, Donna and Amy has done
over the years, not to mention everyone else throughout the 52 years that
Doctor Who has been on our screens, entertaining us for generations.
This episode’s
introduction is what made acknowledge how far Clara’s personality as a whole
has changed since meeting the Doctor. Before, she was a nanny, looking after
two kids whilst their parents would go out to work. She was able to give the
Doctor a run for his money from the word go, but just as a standard companion
way: Questioning what’s going on, how things worked especially the TARDIS,
and of course being amazed at everything alien she sees, but then she gradually
and noticeably mould into someone less like a companion, but more like the
Doctor himself. This character development only started to come about after the
unfortunate death of Danny Pink, a fellow colleague at a school where she
teaches English and him Maths. Season 8 saw her juggle life with the Doctor and
Danny, trying to keep the two separated as much as possible, only for her to
not have bothered in the first place for they end up doing so anyway, and at
the end of the season, you saw Clara devastated at his untimely death and
decided to not travel with the Doctor anymore, which is understandable.
However, who can
resist travelling through time and space with the Doctor, go exploring any planet
in any galaxy, and meeting aliens and seeing the Universe in all its glory. No
one can, especially Clara, and so she returned and continued to travel with the
Doctor. It was also during season 8 that she started to develop into someone
much more unlike an ordinary companion the Doctor is used to,
but more like someone who is able to put the Doctor in his place, and only one
other person can take that achievement: River Song.
Then
Season 9 rolled on by and now that Danny is out of the picture, she doesn’t
have anything to keep her grounded and so Clara embraced the chaotic life and
made sure that she always hit the ground running. By the time this episode,
Face the Raven came along, you started to question who was more like the
Doctor. Clara started to take risks – big ones at that – and was able to talk
her way out of situations only the Doctor would find himself in, expertly
conducted as if she was someone who she wasn’t.
And that is why she
hit the ground head first in this episode. She took the biggest risk ever.
Granted, she took that risk because it would be saving a friend, but taking
something that is
counting down to their own death. That is something only the Doctor would do to
save someone he cares about. But being like the Doctor has consequences, and so
Clara met her fate and ended up facing the raven.
However, she wasn’t
going to go out kicking and screaming. What brought her character around to a
fitting finale, was that she accepted her decision and wouldn’t allow anyone to
take the blame for any part of it; no one forced her to, she just did it to
save a friend. During her last few minutes, she told the Doctor, or rather
ordered, to not avenge her death. Do not go after the people
who made this happen.
Just move on and accept that
she made this decision on her own, not because of him.
Then
it was time. She walked out with only one intention, being brave. Then it was
all over. There was nothing more the Doctor could do except watch as his
companion, Clara Oswald, departed from his life forever.
Then
it was Peter Capaldi’s time to shine. Each Doctor brings their own
version of the Time Lord rage, and Peter certainly raised the bar to a new
level. He told Me to stay away from him as far as she could go for he just
doesn’t know what he will do. I could see it in his eyes that he was angry, but
he was keeping to Clara’s last words and not avenging her. The episode ended
with the Doctor being teleported to a faraway place.
I am looking forward
to next week’s episode because it will be unique in that the Doctor will be the
only one, bar from one monster, on-screen,
and I am intrigued to find out what the Doctor will do when angry and alone.
Something tells me it will be something dramatic to say the least.
An
emotional episode through and through for I knew that it was only a matter of
time before Clara left, and so waiting for that moment was sad, then when it
eventually happened, it was even sadder. Incredibly well acted by both Peter
and Jenna, I’m sure this episode will go down as one of the greats, purely
because of the character development involved.

Game of the Week
Euro Truck Simulator 2:
After
a long, hard day at work or for other reasons and all I wanted to do was kick
back and put my feet up relax, I turned to this game for its simple,
not at all demanding gameplay that requires nothing more than just driving a
truck from one destination to another. That might not be selling the game as
much as I wanted to, but that is all I needed to relax for I could add other
elements to the mix as well, such as listening to podcasts, music. I could
break away from reality and lose myself in my own world. I didn’t have to think
about solving difficult puzzles or constantly being alert for whomever might be
around the next corner, all I had to do was sit back and drive.
Euro
Truck is one of the best simulators on the market in my opinion, not because of
the reasons above, but because of how actually realistic everything is, from
the sounds of the truck to how heavy the controls feels when pulling a
twenty-something tonne trailer. There are many simulators out there that are
just there to try
to be something they’re
not, it’s rather disappointing actually to see something that looked as if it
was put together in a matter of minutes instead of putting some effort into it.
I like this game
because it helps me relax, and I know that is rather a particular quality when
looking for a game to play as other people relax to playing something a bit
more energised, I’m just saying what mine is, really.

Video of the Week
Heartbreaking Video of Father Explaining Paris Attacks to Young Son:
When I heard about the horrific Paris attacks, I wanted to write a standalone article expressing my support and how everyone has banded together to bounce back as quickly as possible, but I just couldn’t find the right words for I didn’t want to start rambling as that would take away the meaning of the article, and everything that I wanted to say was already said so I didn’t want to seem as if I was taking other people’s words and trying to act as if they were my own.
I am not going to say much about this video, because it explains itself. This video shows a
father explaining to his son how they are going to stay in Paris and not let
anything keep them down. The moment his son says the necessary words to show
his father that he understands is beautiful. It is this video that shows us how
strong the world truly is when being pushed to its breaking point. The level of
support the world has given, even if all they can do is subtle, it still counts
and that is all that matters.
