The Watch - Part 15

‘Your body can withstand being hit by an insane amount of pressure. It can deflect a bullet, bend a sword, and even come out of the other end of an explosion with barely a scratch. The chemicals that you mixed have somehow found a way into your system and as a result has toughened every cell in your body to the point where you are practically unbreakable,’ explained Sarah who was examining David’s blood with a microscope. David was sitting on a hospital bed, putting on his top. ‘But there are limits,’ she continued. ‘For example, your body will not be able cope with a nuclear explosion.’

‘But what are the chances of coming into contact with that?’ David asked.

‘What are the chances of coming into contact with certain chemicals to make your body indestructible?’ Sarah answered with a rhetorical question.

‘Well, if you put it that way,’ David said, shrugging.

‘How can you do it?’ Sarah asked looking up from her microscope.

‘Do what?’

‘Not worry about this. Not over-thinking what could happen and how.’

‘I’ll worry about that when I come to it,’ David said seriously. ‘But for now, I’ve got work to do,’ and he stood up and started to walk towards the door that lead to the main corridor of the police station. ‘Oh and, Sarah,’ he said turning around half way out of the door.

‘Yeah,’ Sarah said.

‘I prefer invincible. Sounds tougher,’ and he smiled before disappearing around the corner, leaving the door to swing shut on itself.

‘Sounds a little cheesy to me,’ Sarah said returning to her microscope before the credits started to roll upwards.

‘So,’ Amy said pressing the open button on the DVD remote and switching off the TV, ‘what do you think?’

‘Awesome,’ I said.

‘You think so,’ Amy said.

‘I do.’

‘Awesome.’ She stood up and sorted out the DVD and placed it to one side. ‘Thanks for them.’

‘No problem,’ I said standing up beside her. Amy lifted her arms up and stretched them as far as they would go and yarned at the same time, causing me to yarn as well. She looked at the time on the wall.

‘We’ve let time get away from us,’ Amy said. Before we sat down and watched the program, we had dinner and talked a bit beforehand. We talked about what our interests are. She likes to go for a bike ride a least once a week and enjoys watching films during that and going to college, where she studies film journalism. I explained how I have always been fascinated by Time travel and Parallel Universes, hence why I decided to travel here instead of some other time back at my home planet. I do occasionally like to sit down and watch a film, but I prefer to play games and read a book. And in between that I hang out with friends and go to college, where I study science.

‘I’m going to head upstairs and get some sleep,’ Amy said. Do you want to crash on the spare bed again?’

‘No, not tonight,’ I said, ‘I had better get back.’

‘Oh, OK,’ Amy was a little disappointed that I had to go so soon. ‘Well, make sure you come back as soon as you can,’ she looked at me sternly.

‘As soon as I get the opportunity to, I will come back,’ I said positivel, smiling.

Satisfied that I meant what I said, Amy said, ‘What have you got planned back at home?’

‘I have a few plans that I would like to get done,’ I said not wanting to say that I wanted to test out the watch more, even though I already know what it can do and have done some of it as well. How I was going to test out the watch some more, I really hadn’t got a clue, but after getting a good night’s sleep, I’m sure the ideas will come.

‘Well, have fun,’ and Amy disappeared out of the living room and headed up the stairs. ‘See you soon.’

‘Yeah, see you soon,’ I said.

‘Thanks for saving us both back there,’ she called down.

‘Any time,’ I said.

Reaching for my watch and, remembering how to navigate to the Parallel Universe menu, scrolled down to the option that said 'home' and lightly pressed it, immediately disappearing from Amy’s living room and returning to my living room, which looked exactly the same as Amy’s save from the box set of ‘Invincible’ on the table beside the sofa, and the pack of six chocolate and strawberry milkshakes... ah... well, Amy can enjoy them, then, can't she?

The journey back did feel a lot better than the journey going. I haven’t gotten used to it properly and my legs felt a little shaky. Travelling through the Void is something extraordinary indeed.

‘I doubt I will ever get used to that,’ I said to myself more than the watch.

‘After a couple more trips, thanks to the watch protecting you, your body will get used it eventually.’ The A.I. said appearing beside me.

‘You know something,’ I said to the man in front of me.

‘What is that?’ the A.I. said.

‘With all the excitement of changing my clothes and travelling to a Parallel Universe, meeting a different version of Amy, I haven’t asked what your name is. I should have done the moment you appeared in front of me,’ I said.

‘I do not have a name,’ the A.I. said.

‘But I can’t keep calling you the 'man in the watch' or 'the A.I. of the watch.'’

‘I will not object if you would like to assign a name to me, if that is what you so wish,’ the A.I. said. I thought about what to call the man in the watch for a couple of minutes, but my being tired pushed aside any thoughts and I yarned again, signifying that I should get to sleep before I get over tired.

‘I’ll sleep on it,’ I said heading upstairs. I checked the time and saw that it was 11 O’clock, the same time as it was in the other universe, which helped a lot for I won’t be experiencing jet lag later on. Getting changed into my pyjamas, climbing into bed and making myself comfortable. Now that I am feeling more normal than I was the other time I climbed into bed, I felt the watch on my wrist as I laid on my back. I thought about how, in a split second, this watch has changed my life completely. And it is now a matter of time before I know whether it is for the best or worse. So far, the watch has been something awesome and I’ve enjoyed it, but I can’t seem to push the thought of it all turning on its head out of my mind. The best I can do is push it to the back and hope for the best.

I rolled over so I was laying on my side and closed my eyes, immediately dropping into a deep sleep.

TO BE CONTINUED…

Thanks for watching
