Film of the Week:

It Follows

I’m not too fussy with the films that I watch, but when it comes to horror films, the right one has to come along before I sit down and watch it. The story can be totally different, but the way it’s told can be much the same as every other horror films: Building up tension by having the character walk down the hallway in pitch black darkness, and long drawn out tension shots leading to nothing. And when the jump scares do happen, because they are following the same formula, they are predictable. If someone recommends one to me, however, then I’ll give it a chance, but other than that, I usually pass. The problem that I have now is because I don’t give that many horror films a chance because I am expecting to be much the same thing, I’m missing out on the ones that actually goes out of their way to do something original and therefore outright terrifying.

I talked about the found-footage horror film, Unfriended, in one of the articles before, and I explained how I found it did something different within that genre. It Follows does the same thing, and it works extremely well.

It Follows is about a teenage girl, Jay Height (played by Maika Monroe), who, after spending a night with her boyfriend, catches a sexually transmitted curse. That curse is one heck of a force against nature as it continuously follows you wherever you go until it eventually catches up to you. And it simply walks. That’s all it does: Walks at a slow pace. You can go as far as you like away from it, it will always catch up to you.

This takes the art of tension and pushes it to another level, because unlike most films where it’s easy to know when a certain jump scare or even is going to happen, with this film you simply do not know at all. Jay does make sure she gets as far away from it as she can, but us the audience knows that it is always coming for her, and can appear in the background at any time. The Director, David Robert Mitchell) uses the background as much as he can, right up to the point where you aren’t just focusing on the foreground anymore. Instead, you are looking behind the characters to see if that thing is sneaking up behind them, and if it isn’t, you just know that it will do soon. To add to the tension, it isn’t a recognisable force. It can be disguised as someone you know or a stranger in a crowd, so if you’re not careful, anyone can be it, and that’s terrifying to say the least. The only jump scares throughout the film aren’t actually because of the thing that is following the Jay, and that’s all I’m saying.

There is one thing that I have to talk about, and that is the curse itself. It’s a sexually transmitted curse, which means it can be passed on to someone else, but just because you have passed it on to someone else, doesn’t mean you’ve gotten rid of it entirely. If the curse catches up to the person you’ve passed it along to, they will come for you next unless you’ve passed it along to someone else. If it catches up to you, it will then go after the person who gave the curse to you. Not only that, but if you have the curse, only you can see the person it is disguised as; to everyone else, it’s invisible, and if you pass it along, you will still be able to see it, but it just won’t be coming after you. Sounds familiar? Sexually transmitted diseases work the same way: It’s invisible to everyone but you until you pass it along, and you haven’t officially gotten rid of it because you did so. As well as a really good horror film that focuses on supernatural forces, there is some truth hidden within the lines.

So, what I’m trying to say is, sure there are going to be those horror films where you know what is going to happen, but I shouldn’t boycott them all because I think they are all going to be the same. Some films, such as It Follows, Unfriended, and the Insidious trilogy shows me just what horror is capable of. I highly recommend this film.

TV Program of the Week

Stargazing Live 2016

First airing in 2011, it has become an annual tradition that Professor Brian Cox and Comedian Dara O’Briain present what is happening in our sky and beyond. Coming live from Jodrell Bank Observatory, this is the perfect way to keep up to day with the latest news about astronomy.

This year, the two presenters spoke with the astronaut, Tim Peake, who is currently residing on the International Space Station, about what life is like up there and what he is doing to prepare for the spacewalk that he successfully completed on Friday, 15th January 2016. Comedian John Bishop joined TV presenter and biochemist Liz Bonnin to discuss what steps astronauts-in-training have to take to be qualified to go into space, and John got to participate in some of the training exercises as well. As well as all of that, they included the audience by asking for their help in searching for new pulsars. Usually, the show runs for three episodes, but they made a special episode dedicated to detailing highlights about Tim Peake’s spacewalk.

If you have a fascination with astronomy, then this is the program to watch. However, because you do have a fascination with astronomy, chances are you’ve already watched it… For those that want to understand more about astronomy and other fields in science, then this is the program to watch. Currently, all four episodes are on BBC iPlayer ready for you to enjoy.

Game of the Week

Parkitect

RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 is still hugely popular for being the best theme park simulator on the gaming market. I think that might just change. Parkitect is currently still in early development, but it is showing great promise. With what features it has, you can already built detailed parks with the standard, balloon stands, Ferris Wheel, and other rides, and who can forget  gigantic and insane rollercoasters, all in the name of keeping your guests as happy as possible.

The game as is, is in pre-alpha, meaning there isn’t any goals, money doesn’t serve any purpose, it’s all about jumping in and playing around in the sandbox mode, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t enough options to have fun with, and with many more coming soon, this game does have a great potential to taking RollerCoaster Tycoon 3’s crown. One feature in particular that makes this stand out from underneath Tycoon 3, is the ability to build loop-the-loops with the top of the loop above ground. In Tycoon 3, you have to make sure that your coaster goes deep enough underground to incorporate the entire loop. That small feature adds so much more to the number of possibilities available when making the best rollercoaster in the world.

However, if you feel as if you want to wait and see what this game will give you in the future, that’s OK, because the developers, Sebastian Mayer (programmer, designer), Garret Randell (artist, designer), and Gordon McGladdery (SFX, music), are looking for a 2016 release for Steam Greenlight.

Video of the Week

Team Fortress 2: Moments with Heavy – Heavy Takes his Driving Test
(By Kitty0706)

This has to be one of the funniest videos I’ve seen in a very long time. Fans of the game Team Fortress 2, will know of the wacky personalities of the in-game characters. Kitty0706 takes those characters and place them in a totally different situation and use their whacky personalities to fuel the epic nature of the video. This video was entirely made in the famous sandbox game, G-mod, which allows you to do pretty much anything you want. Kitty0706’s precision, attention to detail, and the incredible use of music and sound effects all make up for one heck of an awesome video. I laughed so hard right the way through until I was nearly falling of my chair.

But if you aren’t a fan of Team Fortress 2 or G-mod, or haven’t even heard of the two games, that doesn’t matter, because, in actuality, you don’t have to know the two games. It’s because they are in a situation they aren’t normally in, it becomes a stand alone comedy, not just a parody. I cannot describe how funny this video actually is. You just have to watch it for yourself. I can guarantee that you will be howling with laughter and clutching your ribs throughout.

The video is about what the title says. Heavy takes his driving test, along with the rest of the red team. You have to watch it to know whether they passed it or not.
