1,000 Words: Old Knobbley

The exact age of Old Knobbley is unknown, but it has been estimated to be around 800 years plus. You can find the ancient tree at Mistley at these exact coordinates 51.938392,1.081335.

A lot of historical moments have happened during those 800+ years, including but not limited to: Henry 3rd begins to rebuild Westminster Abby in 1245; The Great Fire of London destroys two-thirds of the city, 02 September 1666; the formation of the United Kingdom in 1707; Sir Robert Walpole becomes the first Prime Minister of Britain, April 1721, the seven-year war between Britain and France begins, May 1756; Sir William Armstrong’s home becomes the first to use electric light, 17 January 1881; 12-month Minors’ strike over pit closures begins, 12 March 1984; and Britain decides not to join the European Single Currency, 01 Jan 1999.

It should also be noted that during Old Knobbley’s life time, it has survived two huge fires that destroyed a large portion of Mistley Woods. Some believe that it’s still alive and growing, whereas others believe it has passed away some years ago, but what we do know is that it will be there for some time to come, sitting peacefully in its small corner of Britain as the world changes around it.
